Italy – only higher end hides profitable
Published: 12 Jun, 2019
Tanners working the higher-end material are reported to be doing just about ok in this market. Those tanners working the medium / lower grade material and reported to be struggling. Prices of finished leather produced from medium grade raw hides are now at a level, not high enough to cover the wet-blue costings. Many smaller tanners are now having problems securing banking facilities, due to the perceived unpredictability of the leather business.
There has been a very slight increase in the split value of hides from South Germany, but the very modest rise of €0.05/kg is purely down to the reduced number of splits being produced in the current climate. The value of these splits has fallen from €1.00/kg in 2015-2016 to today’s price level of €0.40/kg. To read more click here.
