Hide prices marked down in Argentina

Right before the end of last year, salted hide traders resorted to another mark-down of their offers, hoping to revive the interest of tanners in their flat domestic market. Again, cowhides were the ones seeing the higher adjustment, down about 2 pesos (US$¢5) per kilo from the previous quotation, losing roughly 20% of their value. The price of steer/heifer types were lowered by ARS1/kg, representing a 6% drop from the previous level.
It remains to be seen whether the recent slowdown of the slaughter rate or the yet-to-be-implemented progressive elimination of the export duties on hides will have any meaningful impact.
