Venezuela: Government occupies slaughterhouses to stymie price increase
Published: 05 Dec, 2018
The Vice President of Economy Tareck El Aissami has said that from November 30 the government will occupy 21 slaughterhouses throughout the country, with the intention of curbing the increase in domestic beef prices.
According to El Aissami, a previous agreement lasted for several weeks, after which the meat processor owners started skirting around the measure and diverted beef to other (unspecified) industries or smuggled them away.
The measure will not affect beef industry by-products such as hides, tallow, collagen, etc., which abattoir owners can continue to trade and export.
The measure is expected to last 180 days and new fixed prices for beef are to be announced later today, December 3. For further information click here.
